Background

REACH Ethiopia was established in 2013, evolving from a research project aimed at combating Tuberculosis (TB). The organization’s mission is to contribute to a TB-free Ethiopia through research, innovation, partnerships, and community-based interventions. Over the years, REACH Ethiopia has successfully implemented numerous projects, collaborating with global partners such as USAID, Stop-TB Partnership, and others. In September 2024, REACH Ethiopia secured a USAID grant to implement intensified TB interventions, demonstrating strategies to eliminate TB in Ethiopia.

Job Summary

The Research Director will play a central role in advancing the SWIF-TB Initiative’s goals by leading operational research activities focused on identifying strategies for TB elimination in Ethiopia. The position holder will oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies, ensuring high-quality outputs that inform evidence-based decision-making, improve knowledge management, and measure project effectiveness. This role requires collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including donors, the National TB Program (NTP), and regional health bureaus, to contribute to TB elimination efforts.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Design and Coordination
    • Develop and refine operational research questions to address barriers in TB service access and delivery.
    • Coordinate the implementation of all operational research activities, ensuring adherence to protocols and standards.
    • Provide technical and epidemiological guidance on study designs and implementation.
  • Capacity Building and Supervision
    • Train and mentor research assistants and local TB experts to strengthen research capacity.
    • Support the NTP and regional health bureaus in implementing the national TB research roadmap.
    • Lead the development and dissemination of research tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge Management and Dissemination
    • Synthesize research findings into technical briefs, policy documents, and scientific publications.
    • Present research outcomes at national and international forums to influence TB policies and practices.
    • Facilitate knowledge sharing to enhance evidence-based decision-making across the health system.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
    • Monitor and evaluate research activities, ensuring timely reporting to donors and stakeholders.
    • Prepare comprehensive quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports on research progress and findings.
    • Measure the impact of interventions on project objectives and overall TB elimination goals.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy
    • Collaborate with national and regional technical working groups to align research activities with TB elimination strategies.
    • Advocate for the integration of research findings into TB program policies and implementation plans.
    • Represent the project in partner meetings, workshops, and high-level discussions.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum: MD or BSc in health sciences with a Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or equivalent.
  • PhD in health-related sciences is an advantage.
  • At least 5 years of experience in research coordination or directorship, preferably in TB or public health research.
  • Proven record of developing research protocols and managing large-scale community-based studies.
  • At least 10 TB-related publications in peer-reviewed journals, with 3 as the first author.
  • Experience in USAID-funded projects and familiarity with the Ethiopian health system is an advantage.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in local languages is an asset.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and research software.
