Improving Laboratory Services for TB Detection

USAID Urban TB LON II project, in collaboration with the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau has conducted a comprehensive AFB Microscopy and External Quality Assessment (EQA) for laboratory professionals from both public and private health facilities.

The training’s primary goal was to enhance the technical skills of lab staff in the accurate detection of TB through smear microscopy. It also aimed to ensure the proper implementation of quality assurance systems and promote adherence to national diagnostic standards.

Participants engaged in both practical and theoretical sessions, covering a wide range of topics, including: Specimen collection and processing, Staining technique, Slide reading, Result recording and reporting, Biosafety measures.

A key component of the training was a strong emphasis on the EQA system, which included blinded rechecking, panel testing, and onsite evaluations. These measures are crucial for ensuring the reliability and consistency of microscopy results across all facilities.

This training successfully enhanced the knowledge and skills of the participants, boosting their confidence in performing routine TB diagnostic activities. Equipped with new tools and expertise, these professionals are now better prepared to contribute to strengthening TB laboratory services throughout Addis Ababa.
