Improving TB Diagnosis to Save Lives in Gurage Zones

Butajira, Ethiopia – October 2025

REACH Ethiopia, partnering closely with the Central Ethiopia Public Health Institute (CEPHI), conducted a critical two-day training in Butajira , under the Urban TB LON II-SWIF TB PROJECT. This initiative served as a vital capacity building effort, targeting 35 laboratory professionals and sensitizing key stakeholders to improve the entire specimen management pipeline—addressing a critical issue that was hindering timely treatment initiation. The core focus was driving quality improvement by optimizing TB specimen referral linkages and enhancing result delivery timeliness. These procedural improvements are essential to achieving early and proper diagnosis, which directly saves lives by accelerating patient treatment and curbing the disease’s spread in the Gurage and East Gurage Zones.

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
