REACH Ethiopia, with support from Expertise France, continues to advance equitable access to quality TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services for pastoralist communities in the Afar Region—contributing directly to Ethiopia’s National End TB Strategy.

Expanding Access to DR-TB Treatment: To strengthen drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) care, REACH Ethiopia officially handed over critical IT and medical equipment to Mohammed Akile Memorial General Hospital, supporting the establishment of a new DR-TB Treatment Initiation Center (TIC). This milestone enhances decentralized DR-TB services and accelerates timely treatment initiation for patients in Afar. The equipment was handed over to Mr. Wottica Nore, Vice Head of the Afar Regional Health Bureau, acknowledging the region’s leadership and commitment to improving TB care.

Driving Results Through Evidence and Partnership: A semi-annual performance review and strategic dialogue was conducted with senior officials from the Afar Regional Health Bureau and representatives of the Ministry of Health (MoH).During the session, REACH Ethiopia’s M&E Director, Mr. Zemedu Mohammed, presented detailed performance findings, highlighting program impact, implementation lessons, and forward-looking priorities under the Expertise France–funded Pastoralist Community TB Project. The engagement strengthened coordination, accountability, and joint ownership of results.

Restoring Mobile TB Services for Hard-to-Reach Populations: REACH Ethiopia also conducted a technical and operational assessment of the region’s TB mobile van equipped with digital X-ray and GeneXpert systems, originally procured by the Ministry of Health through the Global Fund and allocated to the Afar Region five years ago.Following previous maintenance support by Expertise France, this assessment evaluated the van’s readiness to resume outreach TB screening and diagnostic services, ensuring early detection and prompt care for the communities.
