This March 8, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honor the extraordinary women on the frontlines of healthcare—the heroes, technical teams, and volunteers whose tireless efforts are turning the tide against TB. In the heart of the Afar Region’s Zone 3, Hinda Humed stands as a testament to this dedication. As a volunteer for the Expertise France-funded project, Hinda is far more than a health messenger; she is the backbone of TB care. Trained and deeply trusted, she identifies cases early—often before symptoms even become severe—ensuring that in these communities, the first line of defense is not a distant facility, but a neighbor who cares.

Hinda’s work transforms TB treatment from a daunting journey into a manageable daily reality. By providing Directly Observed Treatment (DOT), counseling, and consistent follow-up right at the patient’s doorstep, she eliminates the crushing burden of travel costs and lost income that so often leads to interrupted care. Beyond clinical support, she is a powerful educator, using community gatherings, market places, and social events to raise awareness and dismantle the stigma surrounding the disease. Whether she is screening households or escorting patients to diagnostic services, Hinda ensures that no one falls through the cracks. Through her resolve, the End TB Strategy isn’t just a global goal—it is a life-saving service delivered one home at a time. Happy International Women’s Day!
