🌍 Strengthening Ethiopia’s TB Laboratory Network: Successful ‘Super User LabXpert Connectivity Training’

The iNTP 2.0 Connectivity Project, an initiative led by REACH Ethiopia, has taken a significant step forward in its mission to enhance the national TB laboratory system. Funded by the U.S. Department of State through a grant from the Stop TB Partnership, the project’s core goal is to build and sustain the LabXpert connectivity system across the nation.

Project Goal: Connectivity and Sustainability

The iNTP 2.0 project is designed to address previous implementation challenges and extend connectivity to over 1,000 diagnostic instruments. This ambitious undertaking aims for a high target connectivity rate of 90%, significantly reinforcing Ethiopia’s national and regional TB laboratory networks.

A key focus of this effort is ensuring long-term success by promoting local ownership within the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). By integrating the system into the national structure, the project ensures the network’s sustainability.

Empowering Regional Experts

To support these critical goals, a successful two-day “Super User LabXpert Connectivity Training” was recently conducted at the Yatu Hotel in Bishoftu City.

The training was specifically designed to equip participants—national and regional TB laboratory experts/advisors—with the necessary skills to effectively operate and manage the LabXpert connectivity system. These certified Super Users will now provide essential technical assistance and guidance to end-users in their respective regions.

Key Training Modules:

  • Data Management: Practical experience in entering sample information and using the LabXpert dashboard.
  • Quality Assurance & Reporting: Submission of TB summary reports, EQA reports, and the ability to review and approve results.
  • System Maintenance: Reporting maintenance issues and documenting instrument calibrations.
  • Technical Installation: Learning how to install LabXpert software and configure VPNs to support peripheral mWRD facilities.

The training successfully concluded with the certification of TB laboratory experts/advisors from 20 Regional Reference Laboratories (RRLs) and Regional Public Health Institutes (RPHIs).

This initiative marks a crucial milestone in enhancing the TB laboratory network, cementing national and regional ownership, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of high-quality diagnostic services in Ethiopia.

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
