REACH Ethiopia Boosts TB Diagnosis in Afar with Equipment Donation

Afar Semera, August 16, 2024

REACH Ethiopia has handover critical TB laboratory equipment and supplies to the Afar Regional Health Bureau, Zone 3. This donation, part of an Expertise France-funded project, aims to improve TB care for vulnerable communities in Ethiopia’s pastoralist regions.

The donated equipment includes TB LAMP, a microscope, a GeneXpert power backup, an inverter, TB LAMP reagents, a microscopy starter kit, and slide staining and fixing supplies. Valued at over 6 million ETB, this equipment will significantly enhance TB diagnosis in the region, enabling early detection, prompt treatment initiation, and improved patient outcomes.

Mr. Wittica Nore, Vice Head of the Afar Regional Health Bureau, expressed gratitude for the support. “This collaboration with REACH Ethiopia is a crucial step forward in our fight against TB,” he said. “The new equipment will strengthen our diagnostic capabilities and contribute to both regional and national End TB goals.”

By bolstering TB care infrastructure in Afar, REACH Ethiopia is working towards eliminating the disease in the region.

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
