Efficient diagnosis is the backbone of the fight against TB. To sharpen this edge, REACH Ethiopia’s iNTP 2.0 Project, in collaboration with the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau, recently convened a high-level consultative meeting bringing together 85 laboratory experts from both public and private sectors.

The primary objective was to bridge the gaps in GeneXpert utilization and ensure that every machine is performing at its peak potential to save lives.

Data-Driven Solutions
Rather than discussing abstract challenges, participants dove deep into the numbers. By reviewing the last six months of performance data from each facility, the team was able to move beyond guesswork.

The experts pinpointed several critical bottlenecks, including:
- Specimen Referral: Logistics delays that slow down the movement of samples from collection points to labs.
- Communication Gaps: Silos between facilities that hinder the reporting and receipt of results.
- Workflow Inefficiencies: Internal processes that contribute to longer-than-necessary turnaround times.

Collaborative Problem-Solving
This wasn’t just a meeting of minds; it was a call to action. Through collaborative sessions, the laboratory experts proposed actionable recommendations designed to:
- Accelerate Turnaround Times (TAT): Ensuring patients receive results—and start treatment—faster.
- Boost Case Detection: Utilizing GeneXpert technology to its fullest extent to find “missing” TB cases.
- Strengthen Networks: Improving the synergy between diagnostic hubs and their surrounding catchment areas.

These consultative engagements are vital to strengthening diagnostic networks and ensuring that the healthcare system in Addis Ababa can deliver on the promise of high-quality TB services.
