Scaling Impact: Addis Ababa Health Bureau & REACH Ethiopia Review Nine Months of PPM TB Progress
Addis Ababa is taking bold steps toward a TB-free future. Recently, the Addis Ababa Health Bureau, in partnership with REACH Ethiopia, convened a comprehensive nine-month performance review of the Public-Private Mix (PPM) TB program.
This high-level review brought together 104 key stakeholders, including health officials from across the City Administration and representatives from private Health facilities, to sharpen the city’s response to TB.
Strategic Objectives
The meeting served as a critical touchpoint to ensure the public and private sectors are moving in lockstep. The primary goals included:
Conducting a deep dive into progress across all sub-cities to see what is working.
Pinpointing operational hurdles and resource gaps that hinder service delivery.
Strategizing new ways to improve patient recovery rates and treatment adherence.
Why the Public-Private Mix Matters
TBremains a significant public health challenge, but the PPM model is changing the landscape. By integrating the efficiency and reach of the private sector with the oversight and standardized care of the public sector, Addis Ababa is achieving remarkable results.
This collaboration is more than just a strategic framework; it is a life-saving mission. By working together, we are finding and treating TB cases faster than ever before.
Key Takeaways from the Review
The nine-month data highlights a strengthening healthcare ecosystem:
Enhanced screening protocols in private clinics are catching cases earlier.
Improved data sharing between private providers and the Health Bureau ensures no patient falls through the cracks.
Stakeholders identified specific areas where redirected resources can have the highest impact on patient outcomes.
The Path Forward
The conclusion of the review marks the beginning of an intensified phase of the program. With a renewed focus on filling resource gaps and scaling successful sub-city models, the Addis Ababa Health Bureau and REACH Ethiopia remain committed to ending the TB .
Together, we are building a healthier, stronger Addis Ababa.
REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
