Ethiopia Takes a Step Towards Eliminating TB with New Diagnostic

Early TB detection is crucial for preventing and controlling the disease. Prompt treatment and reduced transmission risk are key benefits. To support this, a successful five-day TB Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (TB-LAMP) assay training was conducted in Adama to equip laboratory professionals in Afar region zone 3 with the skills needed for early TB detection.

The training included both theoretical and practical sessions, ensuring participants are proficient in using the TB-LAMP machine. This crucial step in preventing and controlling TB will reduce transmission risk and improve treatment outcomes. The training was supported by the Expertise France Reaching Vulnerable and Key Affected Populations in Pastoralist Areas of Ethiopia project and the Afar regional health bureau.

Currently, the project procured four TB-LAMP machines for AFB facilities in Afar zone-3, marking the first implementation of TB-LAMP for TB laboratory testing in Ethiopia. This is expected to inform national-level scale-up of the test.

TB-LAMP is a rapid molecular TB diagnostic assay that can be completed in under an hour and read with the naked eye under UV light. Its low infrastructure requirements and ease of use make it a WHO-recommended replacement for AFB microscopy. The project remains committed to strengthening the capacity of laboratory professionals to improve TB diagnosis and treatment in the region.
