A five-day training session on the GeneXpert MTB/RIF, MTB/XDR, and LabXpert connectivity system was recently conducted, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the capacity of laboratory professionals for accurate tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in Ethiopia. The session, attended by 61 laboratory professionals from hotspot regions, was organized by the USAID UrbanTB LON II Activity-SWIF TB Initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Bureaus of Central Ethiopia, Oromia, Sidama, and South Ethiopia.
The comprehensive training covered crucial aspects of TB diagnosis, including:
• GeneXpert TB Detection Methods: Participants gained in-depth knowledge of both the theoretical and practical applications of the GeneXpert MTB/RIF and MTB/XDR systems for TB detection.
• LabXpert Connectivity Solution: Training also focused on utilizing the LabXpert system to optimize laboratory workflows. This included enhancing turnaround time, monitoring system performance, generating detailed reports, managing laboratory inventory, and efficiently troubleshooting potential maintenance issues.
A highlight of the session was the active engagement of participants, who raised pertinent concerns regarding the implementation of GeneXpert diagnostic technology. These concerns were thoroughly addressed by delegates from the Ministry of Health, the Regional Health Bureaus, and the Activity staff.
Upon successful completion of the training, all participants received certification, further solidifying their expertise in TB diagnostics and laboratory management. This training represents a crucial step towards improving TB diagnosis and treatment outcomes in Ethiopia.
