Strengthening the Frontline!

We successfully delivered an Integrated Refresher Training (IRT) on TB for 82 Health Extension Workers (HEWs) from Liben and Meda Welabu Woredas, East Borena.

Held in Nagelle Borena and Bidire towns, this crucial capacity-building effort is part of the US Government support; Urban TB LON II Project, which specifically and reinforces health services in high-burden zones.

HEW Capacity Enhanced in Key  Areas:

  • ️ Community Mobilization: Enhancing awareness and community buy-in.
  • Case Identification & Referral: Training HEWs to spot and refer presumptive TB cases quickly.
  • DOT Service Provision: Ensuring patients complete their full treatment course at the kebele level.
  • Contact Tracing & TPT: Preventing new infections by finding and treating close contacts (TPT – TB Preventive Therapy).

This vital effort is expected to dramatically improve TB case detection and follow-up in the community, ultimately saving lives and decreasing the spread of the disease!

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
