Closing the Diagnostic Gap: Capacity Building for  Lab Experts to Improve TB Detection

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – To ensure every patient receives an accurate and timely diagnosis, we recently concluded a comprehensive capacity-building training for 30 laboratory professionals. The participants were drawn from Private-Public Mix (PPM) health facilities across the capital.

Addressing the Gap

The training was developed in response to a recent technical assessment that identified critical gaps in diagnostic capacity within the private sector. By bridging these gaps, we are ensuring that the quality of TB services remains consistent, whether a patient visits a public hospital or a private clinic.

Key Focus Areas

The intensive sessions provided participants with the technical expertise necessary to elevate laboratory standards, focusing on:

  • Advanced Practical Skills: Hands-on training in the latest laboratory techniques.
  • Enhanced AFB Testing: Improving the quality and reliability of Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) microscopy.
  • EQA Performance: Strategies to boost participation and scores in External Quality Assessment (EQA) programs.

Our Commitment

By empowering frontline laboratory personnel, we are not just improving test results—we are improving lives. Accurate diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment and, ultimately, a TB-free community.

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
