Turning Any Room into a Safe X-Ray Space

Gone are the days when X-ray screening required bulky machines, dedicated facilities, and long wait times. Today, ultra-portable digital X-ray machines are changing the narrative, transforming one room at a time.

Our team provides lifesaving activities to the most TB risk population group, by going to the community and conducting screening using ultra-portable digital X-rays, by instantly converting a standard meeting room into a fully functional, radiation-safe X-ray screening space. There’s no need for construction or heavy infrastructure—just smart technology and an efficient setup.

This innovative approach allows us to bring high-quality diagnostic imaging to places previously out of reach, from schools and clinics to training centers and mobile shelters. Combined with AI-aided detection tools and robust shielding practices, these devices help us reach the most TB risk populations quickly, safely, and with dignity

Now, every space can be a screening space, and every screening brings us one step closer to ending missed diagnoses. This includes diverse locations such as detention centers, industrial parks, youth centers, clinics, health centers, meeting halls, feeding centers, Prisons schools, and more.

REACH Ethiopia has pioneered introducing this ultra-portable X-ray machines in Ethiopia. For the past two and a half years, machines procured through the Stop TB Partnership have been strategically deployed across various settings and locations, significantly enhancing TB detection, facilitating earlier diagnoses, and supporting documentation, operational research, and knowledge contribution for future advancements. All activities prioritize equity, reaching the most marginalized and underserved communities, and are conducted in full compliance with the Ethiopian TB, HIV, and Leprosy guidelines, as well as the radiation safety measures established by the Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority.

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
