REACH Ethiopia Deploys AI-Driven Technology in Sidama to Accelerate the Fight Against TB

REACH Ethiopia’s Urban TB LON II Project, in collaboration with the Sidama Regional Health Bureau, commemorated #WorldTBDay2026 at Wosha Soyama Kebele in Wondo Genet Woreda, Sidama Region.

The celebration featured a mass active case-finding drive utilizing cutting-edge AI-driven Digital X-ray technology, sputum samples were collected from presumptive cases for bacteriological confirmation & intensive health education was provided to the community.

One of the most impactful moments of the program was hearing the powerful journey of a TB survivor, whose story of resilience inspired everyone present to join the fight against this disease.

We were honored to host senior officials, including Mrs. Belayneh Bekele, Deputy Head of the Sidama Regional Health Bureau, alongside Woreda Administrators and influential religious and community leaders. While active case-finding is a daily priority for REACH Ethiopia, this event was unique; we moved beyond standard operations to intentionally showcase our life-saving technology to key stakeholders.

By bringing leaders directly into the screening process, we transformed a technical health service into a shared mission. This celebration stands as a powerful testament to our unwavering commitment to saving lives and achieving the National End TB Strategy.

The Urban TB LON II Project is supported by the U.S. Government and is currently saving lives across Addis Ababa, Shaggar, Harar, and Dire Dawa, as well as TB hotspot areas across eight zones in the Oromia, Sidama, Central, and South Ethiopia regions.

“Yes! We Can End TB—Led by countries, powered by people.”

REACH Ethiopia grew out of a TB project that started in 2010. This project introduced an innovative community package that engaged health extension workers (HEWs) to increase TB case detection and treatment adherence.
